Stetson Bennett breaks down highlight throw to Ladd McConkey
Right before halftime against Oregon on Saturday, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett found Ladd McConkey for a touchdown in one of the most impressive plays of the game.
Facing first-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Bennet dropped back and searched for an open receiver but didn’t find any. Time was running out, and a group of Ducks defenders were closing in for the sack. Bennett shook off one Oregon player and let it fly to McConkey, who was standing all alone in the end zone.
But when asked about the play postgame, Bennett said it wasn’t a wise decision despite the fact that it worked out. Instead, the quarterback felt he should have thrown the ball away or held on to it knowing that there were two more chances to get a touchdown he didn’t score that play.
“It wasn’t smart,” he said. “I need to not do that (on) first-and-goal from the 1. But, I knew that we had motioned Ladd over there. Obviously we had never hit him, but I started scrambling and tried to find him because I knew he was over there somewhere and then found him and threw it. It probably wasn’t smart of me. I need to either ground it to him or run it or throw it to Brock (Bowers) or something. First-down-and-1, don’t do that.”

Everything ultimately ended in the Bulldogs’ favor and Bennett got a highlight play out of it. However, he will be more aware of these situations going forward.
Bennett finished Saturday 25-of-31 passing for 368 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also added a score on the ground as Georgia claimed a dominant 49-3 win. McConkey finished as the team’s second-leading receiver with five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Coming off of a national championship this past season, Georgia once again looked the part Saturday. Stetson Bennett, Ladd McConkey and the rest of the Bulldogs offense will look to keep rolling when they face Samford at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
