Stetson Bennett is the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs heading into 2022 but there has been plenty of hype surrounding his future successor, Carson Beck.

Both Bennett and Beck had impressive showings at the Georgia spring game and the veteran — who led the Bulldogs to a national title win last season — was asked about what he saw from the young signal caller.

“I thought he played really well,” Bennett said after the scrimmage. “I’m glad he didn’t score more points for the Red team, because we won, and then he came over and helped us out on the Black team. But I thought he played well. We are about to go watch it and will have more of an idea after that, but he looked calm, cool and comfortable with the ball.”

While fans will have varying opinions, this feels like an ideal situation for Kirby Smart and the Georgia offense. Stetson Bennett can continue to serve as a mentor for Beck while leading the offense in 2022 and the young passer won’t have to get thrown into the fire too soon.

Still, as Paul Finebaum recently noted, the chatter surrounding Bennett as the starting quarterback isn’t likely to die down anytime soon.

Paul Finebaum: Stetson Bennett, starting QB chatter not stopping anytime soon

Stetson Bennett is preparing for another season as the Georgia starting quarterback and longtime ESPN SEC guru Paul Finebaum doesn’t think the rumblings around the Bulldogs’ signal caller are going to die down anytime soon.

“I think the Bennett conversation is going to go on and on and on,” Finebaum said while joining McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning. “Regardless of what Kirby Smart says, I think there is still going to be the chatter. It may not be legitimate chatter, but it is still chatter. I would advise Kirby Smart to quit trying to defend Stetson Bennett. He’s made it clear he is the quarterback and whether the fans buy into that or not is a different question.”

There was plenty of hype surrounding backup quarterback Carson Beck coming out of the Georgia spring game and it won’t be a surprise to hear his name mentioned this season. Still — while Beck is undoubtedly the future — it’s impossible to ignore the experience and production Bennett brings to the table in 2022.

It won’t be a surprise to hear calls for Beck if Stetson Bennett struggles at any point in the season, but as of now, it’s safe to say the veteran has the starting job locked down.
