ESPN evaluates Stetson Bennett's fit with Los Angeles Rams
Stetson Bennett was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and it’s the perfect fit.
That’s what ESPN’s Louis Riddick and Matt Miller described the selection as Saturday during the draft in Kansas City. The former Georgia quarterback and two-time national champion was the latest signal caller selected.
But he arrives in an interesting situation behind former Georgia quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford.
Stafford just won a Super Bowl two years ago with Los Angeles and looks like a mentor to Bennett for down the line.
“When I watched this young man play, the movement in the pocket, the field vision, the decision making, the accuracy, he can layer the second level throws, he can put heat on it when he needs to, he can throw the deep ball with touch, he’s accurate in the in the red zon,e he can get outside the pocket, he’s got underrated run skills,” Riddick said on ESPN’s broadcast. “And he goes into an offense that is an 11 personnel, 12 personnel, throw the football in the middle field emphasizes play action-type of offense, that’s exactly what he did down there in Georgia.
“And the Rams only had one quarterback on the contract, that being Matthew Stafford. I love the pick. I think he was in a perfect place.”

NFL Network’s Peter Schrager reported the Rams had eyes on Bennett throughout the entire draft process. Essentially, the Rams traded back Day 2 knowing Bennett was the target Day 3.
“Yeah, I agree,” Miller said of Riddick’s take. “I think it’s the perfect place to go. He’s not gonna have to play right away but you’re getting him in a system that’s very comfortable. He also lost one game in college and we can talk about the fact that he’s undersized. He’s a little bit older. You still have to make the plays guys, you still gotta make the throws.
“And at the NFL scouting combine, he was throwing deep balls and stuff better than the quarterbacks who went in the first round on Thursday night, so there’s a lot of talent here. It’s just the right situation in my opinion.”
ESPN’s Todd McShay said he was built different.
“I just love the fact that he’s kind of a different cat now,” McShay said. “No kidding he’s a different cat. He just went to two national championships and was told he wasn’t the guy there, overcame all of that (and to do that), you got to be a different cat. I liked that.”
