Stetson Bennett offers thoughts on lack of national championship tribute in home opener
The 2021-22 Georgia Bulldogs did what four decades’ worth of Georgia football teams couldn’t–they won a national championship. The leader of that team was a walk-on quarterback, Stetson Bennett. However, the program didn’t have a tribute to this historic team at Georgia’s home opener against Samford.
Stetson Bennett gave his thoughts on this lack of reference to the national championship team while speaking to the media after the game.
“I mean, I obviously don’t have anything to say about what gets put on the big board,” Stetson Bennett said.

The national championship was last season. 2022 is this season. At least, that’s the message this gives and it proves that the program is looking forward now.
“But, you know, I like it because, you know, it’s this year. I mean, the people we play can care less about what happened last year. You know they’re going to come after us, the University of Georgia, and try to beat us.”

In the game itself, Georgia beat Samford 33-0. Stetson Bennett, for his part, threw for 300 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown.
Stetson Bennett for Heisman?
Not a lot of people think of Stetson Bennett as a Heisman-contending quarterback. In the public’s perception, he’s the game manager befitting from an elite team around him. At the same time, he’s continuing to improve and early in the season, Bennett looks like a potential Heisman contender.
In fact, On3’s Matt Zenitz has Stetson Bennett third through Week 2 in the running for the Heisman Trophy. In the past two weeks, he’s thrown for better than 300 yards each game. On a team like Georgia, he could easily be in a position to go to New York at season’s end.
