Georgia Bulldogs signee EJ Lightsey suffered multiple gunshot wounds on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, a teammate of Lightsey provided an update on his condition.

According to a teammate via FOX 5 Atlanta, Lightsey is alert and talking. He is scheduled to undergo surgery “soon.”

The shooting occurred in Fitzgerald, Georgia, which is Lightsey’s hometown. He was transported to a local hospital following the incident for treatment on “serious but non life threatening injuries.”

The gunshots struck Lightsey in his shoulder and back.

Lightsey is the No. 483 recruit in the 2022 class, No. 48 linebacker and No. 45 player in Georgia, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Lightsey helped Georgia reach a top-three class this recruiting cycle.

Lightsey is part of a top three recruiting class for Georgia

Georgia brought in the third rated 2022recruiting class, according to the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. The Bulldogs brought in four five-star prospects, 18 four-star recruits, and seven three-stars, for a total of 29 commits. Lightsey is one of 15 defensive players to make up the 2022 class for Georgia. He is also one of four linebackers.

Lightsey and the rest of the incoming defensive players will look to uphold a very strong level of play for Georgia on that side of the football. The Bulldogs won this past year’s National Championship after earning the third seed in the College Football Playoff. Georgia’s defense led the nation by allowing 9.5 points per game this season, with Clemson’s 15 points being the closest competitor. The Bulldogs also ranked highly by allowing 253.9 total yards per game (second in nation), 172.2 passing yards (third), and 81.7 rushing yards (third).

Georgia was undefeated entering the SEC Championship before losing to Alabama, who they went on to beat in the title game. The Bulldogs will be tested right away in 2022, with an opening week matchup against Oregon scheduled for September 3.
