Travaris Robinson details how Will Muschamp has helped him transition to Georgia's staff
Travaris Robinson has had extremely close ties to Will Muschamp for a long time, though the two are now playing inverted roles at Georgia on coach Kirby Smart‘s staff.
Robinson is the team’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, while Muschamp recently took a step back and will serve as a defensive analyst in 2024.
But to Robinson, there really hasn’t been any practical change to how he interacts with Muschamp on a daily basis.
“His role look like same thing when he was a head coach when he was coming down on my neck every single day,” Robinson said with a big smile. “I mean he’s in every single meeting with me, bothering me all the time. So it’s crazy, man.”
Robinson got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Auburn back in 2006, when Muschamp was the defensive coordinator for the Tigers. He spent two years there.
Later, Robinson linked up with Will Muschamp at Florida in 2011, when Muschamp became a head coach. The talented defensive backs coach spent the next decade with Muschamp, at Florida, Auburn and then South Carolina.
Only recently did Robinson branch out on his own again, taking a job at Alabama as cornerbacks coach. Will Muschamp, meanwhile, worked his way into a co-defensive coordinator role at Georgia. Then this offseason the two rejoined in Athens.

The sheer amount of coaching acumen on Smart’s staff has impressed Robinson.
“My entire career, whether it’s been coach Muschamp, coach (Nick) Saban being in the room, now I’m at a place, I’m at the University of Georgia, coach Smart’s in the defensive back room, he’s a DB guy,” Robinson said. “Coach Muschamp’s in the DB room. Coach Donte (Williams) is in the DB room. I mean it’s like an AFCA clinic every single day, man. But at the end of the day, man, it’s been great.”
Robinson has praised his former mentor for once again helping him get up to speed.
“I really enjoy coach Muschamp being here and helping me kind of get through the process of learning how we do things,” Robinson said. “Because some of the things that we do here is a little different than what we did at Alabama. Kirby’s done a really good job, and coach (Glenn) Schumann, of changing some of the different things we did and making it not as complex, and I think our guys are able to play faster because of that.”
Georgia should have extremely good coaching in the secondary, if the men they have assembled there are any indication. Robinson has long been regarded as one of the nation’s best recruiters and a capable technician in the back end.
He’ll combine his knowledge with Will Muschamp, Smart, Schumann and Williams to try to help Georgia back to the College Football Playoffs.
“I’m not coming up with anything new. I am who I am. I learned from who I learned from,” Robinson said. “He’s a guy that I respect in this profession. I respect as a man, I respect as a father, I respect. He’s a great guy. I think the one of the things that I do is stay true to who I am and what I believe. And I’ve got a different delivery. Coach Muschamp and I, we say some of the same stuff, all right, but I say it a little different than him. I’ve got a little nicer side than he’s got sometimes.”
