Travaris Robinson opened up on his decision to leave Alabama for Georgia days after Nick Saban’s retirement.

One of the biggest reasons? Will Muschamp. Robinson will serve as the new co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2024.

Muschamp, who’s a defensive analyst for Georgia, vouched for Robinson and felt he was a logical fit for the job.

“I’ve been with Coach Muschamp for a long time,” Robinson said. “I GA’d for him at Auburn, worked with him at University of Florida, was a defensive coordinator at South Carolina. He’s a guy that has been a mentor to me, father figure. And everything that I’ve done in my career, he always assisted me. When he told me that he was looking into not being here full, full time, but being here a lot of the time, it’s something that I wanted to do because he wanted someone because he’s a big time Georgia.

“Obviously played here and did those different things and he wanted to pass that torch to somebody that he felt that can come in and kind of run things like he did.”

It didn’t take long as Robinson was sought after upon Saban’s retirement after the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Rose Bowl.

“And I was excited about that call,” Robinson said. “When Coach Saban retired Coach Smart called me and Coach Muschamp and him got on the phone and told me exactly you know what it was going to be,” Robinson said. “And I was excited to do and I wanted to be a part of the same type of culture, the same type of environment, and I thought this was the best thing for me to do.”

Robinson was hired to replace Muschamp, who moved into the previously mentioned analyst role at Georgia.

“We are pleased to announce Travaris Robinson as our new Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach,” Smart said in a statement, per DawgsHQ. “Travaris has 17 years of college coaching experience, including over a decade in the SEC mentoring some of the top defenses statistically in the NCAA.

“We are excited about the addition of Coach Robinson and his family to the University of Georgia, while having the opportunity to retain Coach Muschamp and his family on our staff.”

Robinson will try to help Georgia win its third national title in four seasons in 2024. The Bulldogs are expected to once again have one of the best teams in the nation this coming season.
