Wes Johnson calls Georgia slugger Charlie Condon 'the best college hitter I've been around'
Wes Johnson had some high praise for Charlie Condon during the Athens Regional clash between the Georgia Bulldogs and Army Black Knights.
The Bulldogs outfielder has been incredible all season long, and he opened up the scoring for Georgia with a first inning home run. Even though he watched someone like Dylan Crews last season with the LSU Tigers, Johnson didn’t hesitate to name Condon as the best college hitter he’s been around.
“It’s impressive. It’s, quite frankly, the best college hitter I’ve ever been around,” Johnson said, regarding Condon’s season. “His plate discipline, just his mind. He gets off his A-swing a lot. So, it’s been a lot of fun to watch. … I’m talking about in the batter’s box too, right? You know, I mean, obviously Dylan [Crews] is a very dynamic player. Really a premium defender in centerfield. Can really run, as well. I mean, Charlie can really throw as well, but you talk in the batter’s box, I haven’t, I haven’t had one better.”
That’s big praise from the coach, and the broadcast made sure to let him know. Still, Georgia is in a dogfight with Army in Athens, as the Black Knights have been on them from the jump. Johnson explained what Georgia needs to do to win their first game of the Athens Regional.

“Well, we gotta get ahead,” Johnson told the booth. “You know, I mean, we’re behind, we’re behind. We’ve walked some guys, hit some guys. You know, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, when you put base runners on for free, you’re putting yourself at risk, you know, for a big inning, or for a home run. Especially in our ballpark.
“You know, tip your hat to them. They’ve got off two really good swings, with guys on base, and we got to do the same. We got to quit chasing. We’ve had a few guys get a little excited, a little early, and we’ve just got to slow the game down. … It’s a long game. There’s a lot of outs left, on both sides. Slow down, have fun and enjoy it.”
Army isn’t making it easy on Wes Johnson, Charlie Condon and the Georgia Bulldogs. We’ll see if they can get a lead and hold onto it against the Black Knights on Friday afternoon.
