Wes Johnson, Georgia announce lucrative contract extension through 2030

Georgia announced a new contract extension for baseball head coach Wes Johnson Wednesday, according to a release.

The new deal runs through the 2030 season. Georgia announced it as an “increased compensation package.”

Johnson released a statement upon signing his new deal, following a successful first year at the helm.

“I’d like to thank Josh Brooks, President Jere Morehead, and all our fans for their commitment to Georgia Baseball,” Johnson said. “We’ve received tremendous support, and if you drive by Foley Field right now, you can see the $45 million renovation currently underway that will enhance our program and help lead us to more success in the future.” 

This was the most successful year for Georgia since the team made the College World Series finals in 2008. The Bulldogs were the No. 7 seed for the NCAA Championships and were one game away from reaching the CWS, under Johnson.

“This past season is one we will always remember,” UGA athletic director Josh Brooks said. “It is a testament to the tremendous work that Coach Johnson and his staff did — and continue to do — in developing our student-athletes both on and off the field. Today is another great day for our program as we look to the future and watch Georgia baseball continue to excel under his leadership.”

Georgia went 43-17 this year, including a 17-13 record in the SEC, under Johnson in 2024. It was the school record for most overall wins and most SEC wins by a first-year coach.

Johnson also became the first Georgia baseball coach to host and win an NCAA Regional in his first season, along with serving as a Super Regional host.

Following the end of his first season, Johnson reflected on his team.

“You just got a bunch of guys together who started believing in themselves and then believing in each other,” Johnson said. “And when you do that, as I’ve said for years in this league, there’s talent in this league. And if you can get the right group together, and get them to believe in themselves, and have confidence, and go out there and take the training we put them through daily that you have a chance.”

“What this group of men did was something I’ll obviously never forget.”
