The Georgia Bulldogs found their man to take over their baseball program in former LSU Tigers pitching coach Wes Johnson. Johnson just helped the Tigers secure the 2023 College World Series championship.

But before LSU wrapped up in Omaha, the new Bulldogs headman was introduced to the local media in Athens as the program’s next skipper.

“I’ve been on record, working at other universities. so this is not just because I’m in this room. I’ve said this is the best campus in the SEC. I’ve been to them all I’ve said; it’s the best campus in the SEC. It checks every box from you’re here, student experience, obviously degrees, the university, But the student experience, facilities, everything. And it’s only getting better. So there’s a lot of things that draw you to this town,” said Johnson.

In the press conference, Johnson highlights quite a few things that drew him to Georgia, along with the student experience. As he mentioned in the statement above, the Bulldogs facilities are some quality SEC facilities. But there is currently a major upgrade in the works for them.

According to Johnson, there is currently a $45 million upgrade in the works to improve the technology around the baseball program.

Johnson on the state of Georgia’s current roster

Along with the student experience and facilities, Johnson is a fan of the Bulldogs roster. During the introductory press conference, he touched on Georgia’s current crop of players and the idea of coaching Charlie Condon.

“Yeah, I’ve had conversations with Charlie,” said Johnson. “The guy could be the best right-hitting hitter in college baseball next year, not that he’s not one of them this year. But Charlie is doing great. He’s in the camp right now. As everybody already knows, he’s up for Team USA. He’ll go out there and hopefully have a good showing and represent our country.”

Condon has racked up the accolades in his redshirt freshman season. The six-foot-six Marietta, GA, native had one of the best statistical seasons for a freshman in program history. Condon finished the season batting .386, had 25 home runs, and 67 RBIs. That earned him SEC Freshman of the Year honors, being named second-team All-SEC, and an invitation to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp.
