When Dan Lanning left for Oregon, Kirby Smart opted to promote from within for a co-defensive coordinator alongside Glenn Schumann at Georgia. He decided on former South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, who discussed his relationship with Schumann this week.

Muschamp worked as Georgia’s special teams coordinator last season after four years as the head coach at South Carolina. A former defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas, he’s now working closely with Schumann to keep the Bulldogs’ defense among the best in college football.

Although he didn’t know Schumann well before he arrived in Athens, Muschamp had plenty of praise for his co-coordinator.

“Glenn’s promotion, in my opinion, is very well-deserved,” Muschamp said. “He’s an outstanding football coach, he’s extremely bright. He has a great rapport with his players. Coach Smart’s going into his seventh season here at Georgia. The two longest-tenured coaches are Glenn and Dale McGee. You really look over those seven years, consistency of their position group’s probably the best that’s been here in those seven years. … But his position’s been very productive, he’s recruited extremely well at his position.

“He’s just an outstanding football coach. He has a very good understanding of what we do defensively, how we adjust things out and he’s always looking for a better way to do it and always researching those things and what can we do to get better in those situations. But I really enjoy working with Glenn because of the intelligence, the football intelligence he has and the passion he brings to the job every single day because those things are really important and the players see that and they understand how invested he is in them.”

Glenn Schumann discusses how Georgia will replace linebacker production

Georgia had plenty of talent at linebacker last season, and that success translated to the 2022 NFL Draft. But with those pieces gone, the Bulldogs have to replace that production — and linebackers coach Glenn Schumann discussed that process in a post-practice press conference.

“You never ask somebody to replace somebody else,” Schumann said. “You ask them to be the best version of themselves. That’s what camps about. Going out there and every day, seeking excellence and challenging yourself to be that, be the best version of yourself. So in that room, I think we’re doing that every day. I’m thankful that we’re healthy and guys are pushing and they’re pushing each other.

“I think the one thing that the standard we set for those guys and the guys before them is that everybody’s competing together and it’s about the team and about each other and these guys embrace that, as well. I’m excited to see where we go.”
