After spending time as the Florida and Georgia head coach, Will Muschamp returned to his alma mater, Georgia, in 2021. There, he was the special teams coordinator. Once defensive coordinator Dan Lanning left to become the Oregon head coach, Muschamp was promoted to co-defensive coordinator.

While meeting with the media during Fall camp, Will Muschamp joked about comparisons between him and Georgia defensive back Dan Jackson, both of whom were walk-on safeties at Georgia.

“He’s the second best walk-on safety in Georgia history,” Will Muschamp joked. “You figure out who the first one was.”

On a more serious note, Will Muschamp had a lot of praise for Dan Jackson. In particular, his work ethic jumps out to Muschamp.

“Everybody loves Dan. His approach to his craft, to his improvement–he has made tremendous improvement in my time here at Georgia, not because of me because of him and his work ethic and his approach about going and doing the things and addressing the things he needed to work on.”

Will Muschamp pointed out a few key ways Jackson helped Georgia in 2021. That included blocking a punt against Arkansas that swung momentum for Georgia and filling in for Chris Smith when he got injured as key ways that Jackson has helped the Bulldogs.

“His role was huge as far as those things were concerned. But, I think, you talk in terms of just respect on the team, the guy’s garnered a lot of respect amongst his teammates and certainly this coaching staff.”
