Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee is in the final stages of becoming the new head coach at Georgia State, according to Matt Zenitz. McGee reportedly hasn’t officially signed a contract, but was offered the job on Friday.

On3’s DawgsHQ also confirmed that McGee has been offered the job and is expected to take it.

McGee, a Georgia native who played running back at Auburn and in the NFL, has little head coaching experience. His lone time as a head coach in college football came as the interim for Georgia Southern in 2015, a bowl win.

McGee has been on the Georgia staff since 2016, coaching running backs among other roles.

Georgia State got into the market for a new head coach recently when head coach Shawn Elliott recently left to take a job coaching tight ends at South Carolina. Both the timing and general unexpected nature of Elliott’s departure left Georgia State in a lurch to try and hire a new head coach with spring practice fast approaching.

Elliott has been the head coach at Georgia State since 2017, compiling an overall record of 41-44 with five bowl game appearances. Prior to that, he was an assistant at South Carolina, primarily as an offensive line coach. That was a role that he began in 2010 and held through 2016 before he left for Georgia State. During that time he also spent time as the co-offensive coordinator and running game coordinator.

Another Georgia position coach recently moved on to a new role

Georgia wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon was reportedly hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Another college defection: Buccaneers hired Georgia’s well-regarded wide receivers coach and pass game coordinator Bryan McClendon as their wide receivers coach, per source,” Schefter wrote on Twitter.

The Bucs previously added Kentucky’s Liam Coen as their new offensive coordinator earlier this offseason. So it’s not the first time dipping into the college pool.

McClendon, 40, spent his entire coaching career in college. He played wide receiver for Georgia from 2002-05 before having a one-year stint with the Chicago Bears in 2006.

He was at Georgia for the last two seasons as the passing game coordinator at WRs coach. He spent time at Georgia from 2007-15 in a variety of roles, including interim head coach in the end.

McClendon eventually ended up at South Carolina as the OC and wide receivers coach in 2016 and stayed there until he moved onto Oregon in 2020. He went to Miami as the OC in 2022 before returning to Georgia that same year.
