Georgia Tech is expected to add a former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback to their coaching staff. On Monday, the Yellow Jackets reportedly settled on former Florida State signal caller Chris Weinke as their quarterbacks coach.

This offseason, Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins opted to remake his staff after a rough regular season. According to FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Weinke is the latest to join Collins in Atlanta.

“SOURCE: Chris Weinke is expected to become the new QB coach at Georgia Tech,” tweeted Feldman. “The 2000 Heisman winner from FSU has been a quarterbacks coach at Tennessee and for the Rams. Rivals first reported the hire.”

After winning the Heisman as the quarterback of Florida State, Weinke tried his hand at the NFL. Following stints with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, Weinke decided his playing career was finished. However, his time in football was far from over.

In 2010, Weinke began his first foray into the other side of football — coaching. He began teaching athletes at the IMG Academy in Florida. Then, he was given another chance at the NFL — hired by the Los Angeles Rams as their quarterbacks coach in 2015.

After spending time with the Rams, Weinke won a national championship as an offensive analyst in 2017 with Alabama Crimson Tide. Then, the former Heisman winner took his talents to Tennessee — becoming the running backs coach for the Volunteers in 2018, then being promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2019.

However, Weinke’s time at Tennessee ended when the Volunteers replaced Jeremy Pruitt with Josh Heupel. Now, Weinke is getting another opportunity to coach in the college ranks with Georgia Tech.

It was a disastrous season for the Yellow Jackets in 2021 — finishing 3-9 and ending their season on a six game losing streak. With new coaches littered throughout the staff, Georgia Tech will look to improve next season.
