Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets hire Heisman Trophy winner as QB coach

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have made the move official, hiring Chris Weinke as their new quarterbacks coach. He will be back in the ACC for the first time as coach after winning the Heisman Trophy with Florida State in 2000.
“I’m excited to welcome Chris and his family to the Georgia Tech football family,” head coach Geoff Collins said in a statement. “In addition to being one of the great quarterbacks in college football history himself, Chris has coached and trained some of the game’s top quarterbacks, and I can’t wait for our talented quarterbacks to benefit from his knowledge and experience.”
Weinke began his coaching career as the head coach of IMG Academy from 2010-14. From there, Jeff Fisher hired him as a quarterbacks coach with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams franchise for two seasons.
Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Mike Locksley had Weinke on staff as an offensive analyst. After one season, he followed Jeremy Pruitt to Tennessee as the running backs coach in 2018 and then the quarterbacks coach in 2019 and 2020.
“I’m excited to be at Georgia Tech and grateful to Coach Collins for the opportunity,” Weinke said. “I already have a lot of familiarity with the staff, having previously worked with Chip (Long) and Brent (Key), having played with (defensive backs coach) Travares Tillman with the Panthers and having recruited (running backs coach) Mike Daniels’ players when he was a high school head coach. It’s an honor to join such a great group of coaches. I can’t wait to get started with all of them and the really talented players in the quarterback room.”

Georgia Tech RB transfers to SEC school
The Alabama Crimson Tide took advantage of the transfer portal on offense this year, landing wide receiver Jameson Williams from Ohio State. Two weeks ago, they added another offensive weapon via the portal for the upcoming 2022 season.
Georgia Tech’s Jahmyr Gibbs announced his transfer destination, with Alabama winning out. The running back burst onto the scene as a true freshman last season and proved to be one of the best all-purpose backs in the country throughout his sophomore year.
Gibbs will now bring over 1,211 total yards and six touchdowns to Tuscaloosa with him. 746 of the yards and four touchdowns came on the ground. His best performance of the season came against Miami, where Gibbs averaged 12.6 yards per touch and got into the endzone twice — one rushing and one receiving.
