Gonzaga Basketball: Alex Toohey commits to Zags, Mark Few

International standout Alex Toohey from the NBA Global Academy in Canberra, Australia has committed to Gonzaga for the class of 2023. He joins four-star guard Dusty Stromer (No. 49).

The 6-foot-8 wing/forward discussed his decision to choose the Zags with On3.

“For me it was the amount of experience in Gonzaga’s program as a whole,” Toohey said. “Obviously an incredible coach in Mark Few that has a proven history, not only with international players, but big guards/wings. Their international play style is one I’m used to at the NBA Global Academy/COE so being able to fit into the system. Also the winning culture in the program, you could just feel that guys wanted to get better from being around them and I can’t wait to immerse myself that.”

Toohey chose Gonzaga over the likes of Michigan, Villanova, and Davidson. He visited each program officially in the month of October.

What type of player is Gonzaga getting in Alex Toohey?

“I’d say I’m a versatile wing that likes to play fast because I can do a bit of everything, shoot, pass, cut, make plays, rebound and push. I can guard different positions on the floor and use my length to disrupt the offense. But just as importantly I do the things that don’t show up on the stat sheets but show up in the results.”

He has a message for all the Zags fans out there.

“I’m excited to join such a great program with a rich history!  I can’t wait to be apart of the winning culture and would love to try and help reward the hard work everyone has put into the program by bringing home a national championship.”
