Junior quarterback Conner Weigman, after three seasons at Texas A&M, announced his transfer to Houston in December 2024. Weigman, who was a five-star prospect out of Bridgeland (Cypress, TX) in 2022, passed for 2,694 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 15 career collegiate games.

The Aggies were 10-5 in games he played in over the three-year span. He however decided that a change of scenery would be best for his career, and that would end up being at the University of Houston.

Houston head coach Willie Fritz, who led the Cougars to a 4-8 record last season, discussed Weigman and how he’s adapted to his new program at this week’s Big 12 Media Days.

“He’s been outstanding,” Fritz said. “Conner you know is from Houston. He was a five-star and played high school there. Had a little bit of an up-and-down career at Texas A&M, but some of that is a change in what they were doing with coaches and different things. And he also got hurt. He probably wasn’t full speed until maybe February after he got to our place in January. But he’s been everything that I’d hoped he’d be.”

“Great young man and great leadership abilities. It’s really hard to coach a football team when your quarterback is prima donna and it happened to me one season a few years ago. But I made the decision that that would never happen to me again. But he’s just been aces. We’re really, really fortunate to have him in our football program. He interacts with everyone and he’s just a real old-fashioned quarterback.”

Weigman has split time at QB in previous three seasons

Jimbo Fisher was Texas A&M‘s head coach for Weigman’s first two collegiate seasons, but was fired and replaced by Duke‘s Mike Elko for the 2024 season. Weigman shared time with other quarterbacks in all three of his seasons, including now Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King in 2022, now North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson in 2023 and Marcel Reed in 2024.

For the first time in his career, he will now head into a season as the bonafide starting quarterback. The Sporting News tabbed Weigman as the No. 13 ranked quarterback in the Big 12 this season.

“Weigman has not played more than six games in a single season the last three years at Texas A&M, where had a 60% completion percentage, 19 TDs and seven interceptions,” they said. “Still, it’s an intriguing fit with second-year coach Willie Fritz. Houston quarterbacks combined for nine TDs and 17 interceptions last season, so Weigman would appear to be an upgrade if he fits with new offensive coordinator Slade Nagle, who was hired from LSU. Weigman does have bounce-back appeal in the Big 12.”

Houston and its new quarterback opens the 2025 season at home against Stephen F. Austin on August 28.
