Bloomington mayor declares Saturday 'Lee Corso Day' on ESPN College GameDay
Saturday, Oct. 26 has been named ‘Coach Lee Corso Day’ in Bloomington, Indiana by mayor Kerry Thomson.
Thomson awarded Corso, the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 1973-1982, a framed plaque on ESPN’s College GameDay, which aired live from Bloomington ahead of Week 9.
Corso was surrounded by friends, family, former players and coaches on the GameDay set for his moment. He also donned a classic Indiana sweatshirt that appeared to be from his coaching days.
“I want to thank you very much for coming and being here, and thank you Mayor,” Corso said. “I appreciate it very, very much.”
Corso has been a prominant figure in Bloomington since the 1970s. Having led Indiana to its first-ever bowl win in 1979, he was indicuted into the Indiana Althetics Hall of Fame in 2010 as the third-winningest head coach in program history.

He joined ESPN by the end of the 1980s, where he’s been ever since. At 89, Corso is a staple of ESPN’s flagship college football pregame show. His iconic headgear picks have become a fan favorite over the years, but has had to miss shows in recent years due to his health.
Corso’s award is just another piece to the exciting lead up to Indiana’s Week 9 matchup against Washington. Former Indiana baseball star and current Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber will join Corso on the GameDay desk as this week’s celebrity guest picker.
This is all to highlight Indiana’s 7-0 start to the 2024 college football season. Coming off a 56-7 victory over Nebraska — first-year head coach Curt Cignetti has his team atop the Big Ten standings and poised for a run in the College Football Playoffs if they can do the unimaginable and run the table during the regular season.
A Nov. 23 matchup at Ohio State may give them trouble — but they have to get through Washington with the entire college football world watching. Kickoff is set for Noon ET live on the Big Ten Network.
