Bruce Feldman names 12 potential coaching candidates at Indiana
After seven seasons, Tom Allen’s tenure in Bloomington has come to an end. Now, with the Hoosiers set to begin a coaching search, Bruce Feldman has named a dozen candidates that could be in the mix at Indiana.
Feldman shared his selections in an article at The Athletic. Of the 12 coaches and coordinators that he named, some of the highlights include Michigan’s Sherrone Moore, Washington’s Ryan Grubb, Alabama’s Tommy Rees, and Washington State’s Jake Dickert. In his tweet, he also included the name of Jon Gruden, the 15-year head coach in the NFL that has been off of staffs since his controversial resignation back in 2021.
Sherrone Moore – Michigan OC
Ryan Grubb – Washington OC
Justin Frye – OL Coach/Associate Head Coach at Ohio State
Tommy Rees – Alabama OC
Deland McCullough – Notre Dame RBs Coach
Jason Candle – Toledo Rockets
Jon Sumrall – Troy Trojans
Kane Wommack – South Alabama Jaguars
Charles Huff – Marshall Thunder Herd
Chris Creighton – Eastern Michigan Eagles
Jake Dickert – Washington State Cougars
Jon Gruden
Moore, Grubb, and Rees are hot names considering what they’re doing currently and have done over their coaching stops. All three are offensive coordinating for a trio of playoff contenders while Moore has had to pull double duty by taking over the head coaching role for Jim Harbaugh in spots in Ann Arbor.
Dickert is then an interesting option for Indiana considering what has happened in the Pac-12. Oregon State, the Cougars’ fellow member in the new Pac-2, has already lost their head coach to a job in the Big Ten this weekend. After three seasons at Wazzu, Dickert may be due for a promotion of sorts as well.
From there, names like Sumrall and Huff are fairly common choices for potential eventual hires to the Power Five. It’s also worth noting that Wommack, the head coach down in Mobile, has some familiarity with the gig as former defensive coordinator and staffer for Indiana.

To circle back to Gruden, it’s unclear how much interest there is in his services. He grew up in the area and “has support with some key IU folks” per Feldman. Again, though, it’s a bit of a question mark, especially considering how his last coaching stint ended. As of today, he is currently serving as a consultant for the New Orleans Saints.
Considering Indiana relieved Allen less than 24 hours ago, this could take some time to develop. Still, with the offseason about to begin, some of these names, at least the ones that aren’t heavily involved in the playoff or postseason, may start to gain traction with the Hoosiers over the next week or two.
