The Indiana Hoosiers announced the firing of offensive line coach and run game coordinator Darren Hiller on Sunday following Week 6. Head coach Tom Allen released a brief statement along with the news of the coaching change.

“I want to thank Darren for his efforts and dedication to our football program,” Allen said. “He represented IU in a first-class manner, but I believe it is time for a new voice to lead the offensive line room.”

Allen has now promoted Rod Carey to offensive line coach. The former Temple and Northern Illinois head coach was serving as an analyst on the staff. He played his college football at Indiana, starring at center from 1990-93.

Carey was Manny Diaz’s replacement at Temple and during his three-year tenure, he posted a 12-20 record. He started off hot with an 8-5 year in 2019 before winning just four games in the next two seasons.

The 2022 season was Darren Hiller’s sixth with the program. Prior to Indiana, Hiller was co-offensive coordinator, run game coordinator, and offensive line coach at the University of South Florida.

Indiana lost to Michigan 31-10 on Saturday in a performance that put the Hoosiers’ offensive line in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The Wolverines got to Indiana quarterback Conner Bazelak seven times for sacks and added 10 tackles for loss. This season, the team is 116th in the nation in sacks allowed with 19 through Week 6.

In the running game, the Hoosiers haven’t been much better. They’re posting just 90.8 rushing yards per game this season and Michigan held them to a net of 19 yards on Saturday.

Following the loss, Indiana is now 3-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference play. The losses have all come in the last three weeks versus Cincinnati, Nebraska and Michigan.
