Caitlin Clark explains emotion of setting NCAA single-season scoring record
Seemingly every time Caitlin Clark plays, she sets a record. This time, it was the NCAA single-season scoring record, surpassing Washington‘s Kelsey Plum with 1,113 points. A great accomplishment to add to what has already been a legendary career with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Clark explained the emotions of setting the record following Monday’s win against West Virginia, reflecting on all of the hard work she has put in. Grinding from the moment she arrived in Iowa City has made the historic moments that much better for her.
“I know I’ve given everything to this program,” Clark said in a postgame interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe. “There is a lot to be proud of. There were a lot of highs, a lot of lows. That’s what make these moments so special. And I’m just thankful, I’m grateful. Just going to soak this in.”
In what has become must-watch television, Clark puts on a scoring clinic each time she steps on the court. She has not finished under 20 points yet, with her season-low being 21 points against Florida Golf Coast.
You will usually see her scoring at least 30 points if not pushing the 40-point boundary. Clark’s season-high was 49 vs. Michigan, making nine three-pointers.
Clark was already the all-time scoring record holder in NCAA history and has added to her tally in the following games. But putting her name in the record books once again was something she will never forget.

Caitlin Clark, Iowa overcome tough West Virginia performance
Clark had a slow first half against West Virginia, only having 11 at the break. However, she turned on the jets and finished with 32 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line.
Iowa was in a tight contest all night and despite Clark getting her usual 30+, the game extended well into the fourth quarter. Clark never doubted her teammates though, knowing they would pull through and send the Hawkeyes to the Sweet Sixteen.
“I think we used our crowd,” Clark said. “We knew we gave up a run to start the quarter but this team was never flustered. I think that speaks to our experience. Couldn’t be happier for this group. We wanted to go out on a high note for our five seniors… It’s just really special. Proud of them.”
Iowa has advanced and will be heading to Albany, just two games removed from the Final Four. Colorado will be the first opponent and Clark will be hoping to continue her elite scoring ways against the Buffaloes.
