Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark took center stage last postseason during the NCAA Tournament and shined, helping brighten the light on women’s college basketball in a new way. But in late August Nebraska‘s volleyball team did the same for their respective sport, as 92,000 fans were in attendance for their game versus Omaha inside of Memorial Stadium for a record-setting outdoor match.

At Iowa Women’s Basketball Media Day Clark was asked if she watched the match and her thoughts on the moment, which was one that was actually closer to home than some would imagine.

“Yeah, well, I was like, first of all, this counts towards their actual record. I’m not sure I would sign up for a basketball game if it counted for my actual record outside,” Clark joked. “But no, I thought it was incredible. I’ve always been a fan of Nebraska volleyball. I think what they do is incredible. I think they sell out basically every game. They’re always ranked in the top 5. But they’re also playing Nebraska-Omaha, so it was just a win for the state of Nebraska. My mom actually graduated from there, so I have a lot of family from there.”

Volleyball Day in Nebraska was a major success with 92,003 in attendance, breaking the previous world attendance record for a women’s sporting event which was set just last year in a 2022 soccer match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg.

“Yeah, I think it’s cool. It shows how excited people are about women’s sports in general. It doesn’t only have to be basketball, doesn’t only have to be volleyball, softball, whatever it is. It’s just super cool,” Clark said. “I can’t imagine those girls’ feelings when they walked out of the tunnel to 90,000 or whatever it was, 90,000 plus people screaming for them. I just know that had to be one of the coolest feelings.”

The stadium environment was electric as seemingly everyone from far and wide within the state visited Nebraska’s football stadium to watch a different team play in a record-setting, paramount moment for women’s sports. Which was also followed by a 75-minute concert from country singer Scotty McCreery.

“I know me and Coach Raina were texting during the whole thing. We’re, like, Man, this is so cool. But Scotty McCreery was performing after, so we’re like, we’ve got to bring somebody to Kinnick. We have to get it done,” Clark said. “Breaking news, we haven’t. But no, so it was just super cool and I’m a fan of women’s sports, so it was fun to watch.”

Clark was asked who she’d want to perform in Iowa’s football stadium if a similar event transpired in Iowa City, landing on two music stars that would surely electrify a crowd of Hawkeyes fans.

“Oh, geez. There would be a lot of people,” Clark said. “Taylor Swift, yeah. I don’t think that’s on her bucket list right now. I don’t know. A lot of people. I would sign up for anything. Travis Scott, that would probably be an insane show. There would be a lot of people.”

Maybe a stop in Kinnick Stadium can be added to the schedules of both artists, with ‘The Eras Tour’ not resuming until November 9 in Buenos Aires, Argentina for Swift and Scott’s ‘Utopia Tour’ kicking off next week on October 11 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hopefully more women’s sporting events like Volleyball Day in Nebraska will happen in the future, and maybe Clark will be involved, as she continues to emerge as one of the most prominent female athletes in the nation.
