WATCH: Fran McCaffery receives double technical, gets ejected after arguing with officials
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery was ejected late in Sunday’s game against Northwestern after receiving a double technical. McCaffery received the first technical for leaving the coaching box while trying to argue for a 10-second violation on the Wildcats.
The coach continued to yell after the first tech, having to be restrained by members of the Hawkeyes coaching staff. That resulted in referee Courtney Green calling a second technical on McCaffery, disqualifying him for the remainder of the game with 7:26 to play. You can view the moment below.
McCaffery was upset that a 10-second violation was not called on Northwestern after it appeared the Wildcats failed to get the ball past half court in time. However, Green stated that the Hawkeyes deflected the ball on a last-second pass, which is why the call was not made.
Minutes later, McCaffery’s son, Patrick McCaffery, also received a technical foul.
At the time that Fran McCaffery was ejected for the technical fouls, Iowa trailed 61-46. The Hawkeyes went on to lose by a score of 80-60, falling to 17-10 (9-7 Big Ten).

This isn’t the first time that McCaffrey’s anger has gotten the best of him during a game. Earlier this year, he had to be separated after getting into an altercation with an Indiana assistant.
Iowa had a lot more problems Sunday than just the call that McCaffery was upset with. The Hawkeyes shot an abysmal 3-of-24 (12.5%) from 3-point range and committed 15 turnovers. Kris Murray led the team in scoring with 14 points in the loss to go along with five rebounds.
Even with the loss Sunday, Iowa still figures to make the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes were projected as a six seed heading into the game according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. They now have four regular season games remaining, beginning with a road matchup against Wisconsin on Wednesday.
