Lisa Bluder admits to calling technical fouls on Caitlin Clark in practices
Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark plays the game with a lot of emotion. If she’s upset with a call by an official, a mistake by a teammate or mad at herself, Clark will usually let you know.
Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder has the task of trying to help Clark keep her emotions in check. Bluder was asked ahead of Iowa’s Sweet 16 matchup with Colorado about how competitive Caitlin Clark is and if any stories stand out.
She admitted that what comes to mind is the fact that she calls technical fouls on her All-American in practice sometimes.
“Man. I mean, I’ve had to call technicals on her in practice,” Lisa Bluder said. “I mean, she gets — like you see her in games and the emotion she plays with in games, the passion, the highs, the lows — she’s the same way in practice when we go against our practice guys.”
Bluder brings in officials to officiate practices. If Caitlin Clark gets upset with how games are being called and goes overboard, Bluder steps in and calls technical fouls on Clark herself.
“When we have officials in, and the officials that we’re bringing in sometimes don’t want to call technicals on us, so I’ll just do it from the bench because I do feel like we have to try to help her maintain her composure at times,” Bluder said. “If they’re not going to do it, then I will.”

Clark has one more year of eligibility remaining to continue adding to her monumental legacy in Iowa City, but she has already declared for the WBNA Draft. The 2023-24 season will be the final one for Caitlin Clark in college.
She’ll go down as one of the most accomplished college athletes of all time, but following her final home game, she was asked what she looks to accomplish in the next chapter during her WNBA career.
“Oh, gosh, I think that’s a loaded question. I think, first and foremost, my focus is solely on this team,” Clark said. “That was one of the reasons I made this decision of letting everybody know I’m leaving after this year. I can have a lot of closure. I could walk off the court tonight and know this is my last game ever in this arena.
“That’s sad, but at the same time, when this journey does end, the WNBA, it’s a quick flip. You’ve got to be ready for it. Yeah, I think the time will come when I sit down and think about all my professional goals and aspirations, but for right now, my goal is to help this team win a national title and have a lot of fun doing it and smile on the way out and enjoy every single second, because it’s gone in the blink of an eye.”
