Following some comments from legendary women’s hoops player turned analyst Sheryl Swoopes suggesting that Caitlin Clark would hold a tainted record should she break Kelsey Plum‘s all-time NCAA women’s scoring record, the University of Iowa is fighting back.

In making her point, Swoopes had several factual errors about Clark’s background. Significant enough errors that it rendered most of what she was saying about Clark pointless.

Chief among those errors was a suggestion that Clark has already used a COVID-19 year and thus is chasing Plum’s scoring mark with “extra” games. She also suggested that Clark was a 25-year-old playing against 20-year-olds.

Swoopes also besmirched Clark’s effort to break the scoring record by suggesting Clark was averaging 40 shot attempts per game.

None of those things are correct, and Iowa issued a clarification with a simple, yet genius, tweet. You can view the text of that tweet below.

In other words, Clark’s record will not only be valid, it’ll also almost certainly be accomplished in fewer games than Plum achieved the feat in.

Plum scored 3,527 career points in 139 career games. At 3,462 points currently, Clark needs only 65 more points to match the record. With her current scoring average of 32.4 points per game, she could get there in about two more games … a total that would put her at 125 career games.

The bottom line is Swoopes made some out-of-pocket comments. Iowa has set the record straight.

And now we all watch and wait, as Caitlin Clark chases greatness and history. It’s certainly been a remarkable run.
