Caitlin Clark has established herself as one of the greatest shooters in women’s basketball history the past few years. That much is certain. But plenty of people across the spectrum have varying opinions on whether or not she is the GOAT of women’s basketball. People are also trying to sort out what makes you a GOAT in any sport? During Sunday’s National Championship game between Iowa and South Carolina, Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird asked former Alabama star Jalen Hurts his thoughts on championships deciding GOAT status.

Jalen Hurts weighed in on GOAT debate for Caitlin Clark

“I think that’s what makes the difference between the word best and great. Everybody dreams of winning championships, you know. That’s where we, coming from Alabama, experiencing that, it’s just a level of having that opportunity year in and year out. And now, to have an opportunity to do that in the NFL. That’s what everybody strives for,” Hurts said.

“I think for Coach Staley she said she got to the dance all the time and never finished it. That’s why she’s coaching. So, I think it is something to winning championships. I think the talent kind of dictates how many you need to win. But championships, it’s all about winning. That’s always the main thing and that’s why everybody competes so much,” Hurts said.

If championships are the deciding factor in determining GOAT status, then unfortunately Caitlin Clark fell just short for the second time in two seasons. She helped guide the Iowa Hawkeyes to back-to-back appearances in the National Championship game, but fell short last year and lost on Sunday to a ridiculously talented South Carolina team. Iowa lost 87-75, but it wasn’t without a spectacular performance from Clark.

Caitlin Clark stuffed the stat sheet with 30 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in what will be her last college basketball game.

Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks finished off their perfect season in Cleveland, Ohio. South Carolina capped off the year with an unblemished 38-0 record. The Gamecocks became the first women’s team to go undefeated since UConn did it in 2016. They got a sensational performance from Kamilla Cardoso, who stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points and 17 rebounds. She won MVP honors for the national championship game.

Following the impressive win on Sunday, Dawn Staley let her opinion be crystal clear on whether or not Caitlin Clark is one of the GOATs of women’s basketball. “Caitlin Clark, if you’re out there. You’re one of the GOATs of our game. That we appreciate you,” Staley said in her postgame comments on stage.
