Kirk Ferentz plans on returning to Iowa as its head coach next season and was prompted to say so when asked Wednesday.

There’s been no indication that Ferentz would retire after the 2024 season or Iowa would consider a change. But nonetheless, he asked and even joked a little!

“I hope so. You know something I don’t know,” Ferentz asked, via Scott Dochterman. “That’s the plan.”

Iowa finished the regular season 8-4 marking it the latest season since 2016 that Iowa has won eight or more games, sans the shorted 2020 season.

Ferentz is 204-123 in his time at Iowa since 1999 and is one of the more revered coaches in college football.

Iowa ended the regular season with a 13-10 win over rival Nebraska in classic Hawkeyes fashion: low scoring and hard-hitting.

“It really was just a classic November Big Ten football game from my vantage point,” Ferentz said postgame. “Nebraska is a talented football team, and they played really hard and played well. They clearly had momentum at halftime. So we knew it was going to be tough … Just is really proud of the guys. Proud of how they finished November, 3-1. We won 4 out of our last 5, and to win the last two are really big. We’ve had our things to overcome, so just proud of the effort everybody put in there.

“Then, in closing, really when I got in the locker room, the first thing I said to our guys, younger guys, I just said, I hope you guys are paying attention because things like that hopefully they’re learning. They’re not out on the field actually doing it, but they’re with their teammates watching it.”
