Lisa Bluder shares what Iowa did during timeout after Caitlin Clark's scoring record
It didn’t take Iowa star Caitlin Clark long against Michigan to break the all-time scoring record in women’s college basketball. Less than a minute into the game, Clark had five points, just two shy of tying and three short of breaking the record, which is what she did from the logo. Head coach Lisa Bluder then called a timeout as quickly as she could to savor the moment.
After the game, Bluder explained that the timeout wasn’t about talking anything over or making speeches. It was about letting Clark have time to reflect on what she’d done.
“We really didn’t talk in the timeout,” Lisa Bluder said. “We all just kind of sat in our thoughts and I just wanted her to have some space to think about what she’d accomplished, and just to enjoy the moment. Usually, that’s not me. I don’t burn timeouts for anything.”
Iowa ended up beating Michigan 106-89, and Caitlin Clark was dominant throughout the game, scoring 49 points in the win. Those 49 points represented another historic mark, becoming the team’s single game scoring record.
It’s difficult to imagine what was going through Caitlin Clark’s mind on the court before during and after setting the record. That was a huge part of why Lisa Bluder used a timeout there. However, Clark did share her thoughts on it after the game ended.

“Yeah, I mean, I don’t know if you can really script it any better,” Clark said.
“Just to do it in this fashion? I’m very grateful. I’m very thankful to be surrounded by so many people that have kind of been my foundation in everything that I’ve done since I was a young little girl. I started crying when watching that video. Just because, like, I’m just filled with so much gratitude and love. The way that these fans support women’s basketball is so special.”
Lisa Bluder admits there is a relief in Caitlin Clark scoring record chase being over
It was an incredible chase to break the all-time scoring record for Caitlin Clark. At the same time, though, Lisa Bluder admitted that it had been a bit of a distraction and that there is some relief in it being over now.
“It’s been a little bit of a distraction, but a good distraction, right?” Bluder said. “You want these kinds of distractions for your team. But at the same time, it’s time now for us to really focus on making our team better and getting ready for Indiana next week, the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.”
