Three-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee begins quest for third Big Ten title with tech fall

Spencer Lee wasted no time in his first match Saturday. The Iowa Hawkeyes star began his quest for a third Big Ten title with a 17-0 tech fall over Michigan’s Jack Medley.

Medley opened his tournament with a 9-0 major decision over Rutgers’ Dean Peterson. Lee was thrown to his back in a scramble by Medley to open things, but recovered and didn’t allow any points.

From there, Lee poured it on with multiple takedowns and turns.

Lee improved his record to 15-0 on the season. He last westled Feb. 19 against Oklahoma State’s Rece Witcraft and won the bout in 51 seconds via fall.

With the win over Medley, Lee advanced to Saturday night’s semifinals against the No. 5 seed Patrick McKee (Minnesota). Lee defeated McKee 7-1 earlier this season. He also beat him via pin back in 2021.

The 109th Big Ten Wrestling Championships were held from March 4-5, 2023, at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the University of Michigan playing host to the event for the first time since 2010. All 14 conference schools participated in the championships, which began Saturday, March 4, with the first-round, quarterfinal, semifinal and wrestleback matches taking place during Sessions I and II. 

Action continues Sunday, March 5, with consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches getting underway during Session III and the first-, third- and fifth-place matches highlighting Session IV.
