After another poor performance on offense, college football fans around the country are wondering what’s going on with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Now you can count former Big Ten coach at Ohio State Urban Meyer among those trying to figure out what’s happening. During a recent episode of “Urban’s Take,” the national championship head coach questions what’s happening in Iowa’s locker room during their current struggles.

“Iowa has a great defense. I was wondering… during the game; I even asked Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, and Reggie Bush. I said what would you guys do? Because I’ve been in those locker rooms where one side of the ball is playing,” said Meyer. “Iowa’s defense was playing as hard as they possibly could. They were in that game because they scored on defense; they held them to three field goals when the offense just gave them the ball.

“So, is there infighting? Are there arguments? It was well documented when we were struggling on offense at Florida one time; after the game, there was almost a fight in the locker room. And I actually let it go because I wanted to hear. I thought it was a cathartic moment: say what you’re gonna say. I’d rather stay here than say it to the media or something, and I wanted to hear it. So whenever you have that kind of one side performing well on the other side the worst in the country, at some point, I wonder what’s going on in that locker room.”

The Iowa offense made Ohio State look like world beaters on Saturday, putting up just 158 yards of total offense. The defense was able to limit the Buckeyes to start the game. The Hawkeyes’ defense held Ohio State’s explosive offense to just one touchdown in the first half.

Kirk Ferentz issues apology to Iowa media after ‘interrogation’ comments

After Iowa’s loss to Ohio State last week, Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz faced some tough questions about the job security of his offensive coordinator — and son — Brian. Ferentz then called it an “interrogation” this week, but has now issued an apology.

Ferentz called the line of questioning by an Ohio State reporter an “interrogation” during his press conference Tuesday and said things “could be worse” because he “could’ve been that guy [and] had his job.”

Wednesday night, Ferentz sent out a statement to Iowa beat reporters apologizing for his remarks.

“I had hoped to join the zoom call this morning, but practice lasted longer than anticipated,” Ferentz said. “I wanted to take a moment to apologize for my comments during the news conference yesterday. I should not have been dismissive of one of your colleagues — his questions were fair. I have a high respect for the work that you do, and I am appreciative of how you cover our team.

“You ask tough and pointed questions but do so with a high degree of professionalism. I tell our players to take the high road and yesterday, I did not do the same thing. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.”
