Iowa State extended preferred walk-on offers Wednesday to Davenport (Ia.) Davenport North defensive lineman Dominic Wiseman and Marion (Ia.) Linn-Mar defensive lineman Luke Gaffney.

Gaffney has an offer from Indiana State as well and DII Wayne State.

Gaffney has gone on visits to the three big schools in Iowa. He visited Iowa and Northern Iowa the last two weekends, and was at Jack Trice Stadium for Iowa State’s season opener on Sept. 4.

Wiseman does not have any FBS offers but does hold three FCS full scholarship offers from Eastern Illinois, Indiana State and South Dakota.

He also has a PWO from Iowa.

Iowa State’s 2022 class is low in defensive lineman

The 2022 recruiting class for the Cyclones is strong, but not on the defensive line.

Council Bluffs (Iowa) Lewis Central’s Hunter Deyo is the highest-recruit in the class, slotting in just inside the 2022 On300 rankings at No. 295. He is considered by some to be a defensive line recruit, but On3 ranks him as an interior offensive lineman.

After Deyo, Iowa State has two EDGE recruits in Blue Springs (Mo.) High’s Ikenna Ezeogu and Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons’ R Mason Thomas. Ezeogu is No. 299 in the On300.

Iowa State do have nine offers out to defensive line recruits at the moment and could extended offers to more players over the coming months. But it seems the staff are providing backup if they fail to land any of those players by extending these PWOs to two raw and athletic local kids.

And Wiseman and Gaffney are good players and competitors too. Wiseman has more than 53 tackles for loss and has been on All-State teams twice.

Gaffney is a state finalist in both wrestling in track and field in addition to his success on the football field.

“Dom can definitely play Division I football,” Davenport (Ia.) Davenport North head coach Adam Hite told the Quad-City Times last month about Wiseman. “We’re just waiting for that offer to officially happen, but I do think he can play in the Big Ten, Big 12 or SEC. He’s got all the attributes for it.”
