Bill Self grades his team at this point in season
The Kansas Jayhawks are currently third in the Big 12, two games out of first with four games remaining. For head coach Bill Self, it’s been a good but not great season.
Ahead of Kansas’ game on Tuesday night against BYU, Self was asked to grade the Jayhawks to this point in the season. It was the same question given to Nick Timberlake, who graded Kansas as a B to this point in the season.
“E. There’s no such grade for that, right?” Bill Self joked. “So, hitting our stride, I would probably say B-. I think that’s probably, NicK’s probably right on point. That’s pretty good coach-speak.”
Kansas hasn’t been eliminated from winning the Big 12 in the regular season, yet. The reality is that Kansas would need Houston to go 2-2 in their final four games with Iowa State losing at least once. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks would need to finish up unbeaten. It’s not impossible but it’s also not likely.
Assuming Kansas doesn’t manage to come back to win the Big 12 regular season, it would be the first time since 2020-21 that the Jayhawks don’t win the conference. It would also be just the fourth time that happened since Bill Self got to Kansas in 2003.
At 21-6 and 9-5 in conference play, Kansas has had some upset losses in Big 12 play. That includes tough games against Texas Tech, Kansas State, and UCF. At the same time, Kansas has several excellent wins in conference play. That includes games against Houston and Baylor. Meanwhile, in the non-conference, Kansas compiled wins against Kentucky, Tennessee, and UConn.

It’s an important final stretch of the season for Kansas, as the Jayhawks look to build momentum for the postseason. That includes a game against Houston that could prove to be vital in the final conference standings this season.
Bill Self confirms Kevin McCullar will not play vs. BYU
Injuries have been an issue for Kansas this season, particularly the Kevin McCullar injury. Now, Bill Self has confirmed that he’ll miss another game when Kansas plays BYU.
“I don’t know about this week; he’s not going to play tomorrow,” Self said. “Yeah, he definitely will not play tomorrow.”
Kevin McCullar, when healthy, brings more than four years of experience playing the college game to Kansas. However, he has only played in 23 games to this point in the season and has only played in three games during the month of February.
