Bill Self reacts to passing Phog Allen for most wins in KU history: 'I think Phog Allen's still the all-time best'
Bill Self made Kansas basketball history on Tuesday night, surpassing Phog Allen for the program’s all-time lead in wins with a 77-69 victory against Michigan State.
Self notched his 591st victory in Lawrence as big man Hunter Dickinson dominated in the win with a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds. But speaking after the game, he downplayed the achievement and still gave credit to Phog Allen for his achievements.
“It means I’m old and it means I’ve had a lot of really good players,” Self said. “We’re proud about that. I haven’t thought about that at all. But certainly proud about it, but Phog Allen’s still gonna be the all-time best coach at Kansas.”
Self is in his 20th season as the Jayhawks’ coach. He has won two national championships and appeared in four Final Fours in that span with NCAA Tournament appearances in every season.
The game between the Spartans and Jayhawks was neck-and-neck and actually tied at 52 with 8:44 remaining. However, Kansas would go on a 6-0 run and never trailed after that point.
KU outrebounded the Spartans 47-43. Other than that, it was a rough game offensively for both teams with the Jayhawks shooting 40.6% and MSU a mere 34.8%.

Kansas won its fifth-straight Champions Classic game and have now won eight of their last nine matchups in the event. Dickinson recorded his 50th career double-double and his second straight 20-point game. Dickinson now leads all active Division I players with 10 career 25-point/10-rebound games.
Rylan Griffen scored 10 points and pulled in six boards, Zeke Mayo grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists, and KJ Adams scored seven points and blocked three shots, tying his career high.
Dajuan Harris Jr. moved to No. 3 on the Kansas all-time assist list, passing Cedric Hunter (684, 1984-87). Now at 690 assists for his career, Harris trails Jacque Vaughn (804, 1994-97) and Aaron Miles (954, 2002- 05) on the list.
In comparison with Self, Phog Allen coached 32 seasons to reach his total of 590 wins. Self has taken 12 less seasons to reach that amount and is still counting as he leads Kansas into 2024-25.
