The Kansas Jayhawks lost defensive back Cobee Bryant during their Week 6 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils. Now, head coach Lance Leipold has shared the latest injury update on Bryant.

Leipold shared that Bryant hasn’t been able to do any team reps during practice. Because of that, he’s going to be questionable to play on Saturday, with Leipold not ready to rule him out just yet.

“He’s probably highly questionable at this time,” Lance Leipold said. “He’s doing a little bit but has not taken any team reps in over a week.”

During his time with Kansas, Cobee Bryant has been a star for the Jayhawks. In each of the last two seasons, he was named a First-Team All-Big 12 performer. He also entered the 2024 season with Preseason All-Big 12 First Team honors. That’s come on the back of a phenomenal statistical career that has seen Bryant play in 41 games and make 111 total tackles with eight of those being tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. On top of that, he has two interceptions and 19 passes defended.

Cobee Bryant initially came to Kansas as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2020, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 529th-ranked player in that recruiting cycle. Bryant had played his high school football at Hillcrest in Evergreen, Alabama.

It was a leg injury that Bryant suffered in the loss to Arizona State. After being helped off the field during the fourth quarter, before being evaluated on the sidelines and going into the locker room. It was a game that Kansas ended up losing on the back of a chaotic fourth quarter that saw the Sun Devils score 21 points late. Since then, Kansas has had a bye week to try and regroup from the frustrating loss.

In place of Cobee Bryant, Lance Leipold turned to freshman Jalen Todd. If Bryant is unable to go next week, then presumably it will once again fall on Todd to fill that gap in the secondary.

This comes amid what has been an unexpectedly difficult season for Kansas. The Jayhawks are sitting at just 1-5 on the season to this point, with three of those losses coming in conference play and the only win over the season coming against an FCS opponent. So, in a season where the Jayhawks are looking for something to go right, losing a key defender doesn’t help.

Next up for the Jayhawks is a game against the Houston Cougars. In their first year under head coach Willie Fritz, Houston has struggled this season and offers a bounce back opportunity for Kansas.
