Former Kansas basketball player Gethro Muscadin 'fighting for his life' following car accident
Former Kansas and New Mexico basketball player Gethro Muscadin was involved in a serious car accident Wednesday night, according to his former coaches.
Muscadin played for Kansas last season before transferring to New Mexico this year. He left the Lobos program earlier this month.
“Last night Gethro Muscadin and a friend were involved in a [serious] one car accident,” Kansas coach Bill Self tweeted Thursday. “He, his friend, and their families need a miracle. Please lift them up as Gethro fights for his life.”
“Please pray for Gethro Muscadin,” New Mexico coach Richard Pitino tweeted. “He’s fighting for his life after a horrible car accident last night. Every prayer matters right now. So tragic and devastating.”
Muscadin, a 6-foot-10 center from Kentucky, headed to Kansas as a three-star recruit and the No. 3 recruit in Kentucky, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

After playing in 0.2 minutes per game, he transferred to New Mexico. In nine games this year, he averaged 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 20.7 minutes per contest.
Pitino told reporters Muscadin left the program after they talked about his “fit.”
“We spoke after SMU, and I think we both agreed it wasn’t the right fit for him,” Pitino said, via KRQE-TV. “We wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully we can help him find a spot that is the right fit for him, and we’ll help him with whatever we can moving forward.”
Muscadin entered the transfer portal earlier this week, according to multiple reports.
New Mexico is 7-6 this season and getting ready to start Mountain West play. The Lobos were to play Colorado State on Dec. 28, but the game had to be postponed due to COVID-19 issues.
Next up for New Mexico is a New Year’s Day showdown with Nevada. The game tips off at 9 p.m. ET on FS1.
