Kansas pulled off a huge win on Tuesday night, defeating in-state rival Kansas State at Allen Fieldhouse. A special guest was in the building to take in the game, with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce sitting front row. Some basketball was in the cards for Kelce just days after winning another AFC Championship.

Kelce headed into the Jayhawks locker room after the game, sending a message out to the entire team. Self then got to interact with the NFL star and gave away some of his impressions. According to the head coach, Kelce is just as impressive off the field as he is on.

“He talked to everybody,” Self said. “I’ve been around him a little bit. I’m not going to say we’re boys or anything but I have been around him a little bit. Thing that amazes me is that he’s on top of his craft in a way that very few are in the world. He’s great to everybody. He treats everybody the same.”

This Kansas team and Kelce are in similar situations, looking for a second championship. March was when the Jayhawks were cutting down the nets and are looking to go back to back, while Kelce has had some time in between his last Super Bowl.

If the Chiefs are able to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles, Self knows Kelce is going to have some fun. Maybe the party can continue on into Lawrence to close out the regular season. If anybody is going to bring energy into the program this late into the season, it’s going to be an amped-up Super Bowl champion.

“He was so excited — and I am not talking from a KU fan perspective — he was so excited to be part of energy,” Self said. “I can’t imagine every defensive player loving him as a teammate. He’s fun. I’m sure if things go well in a couple of weeks, he will be a ton of fun for the next month or so after that.”

Kelce will head to Arizona in the near future, with the Super Bowl taking place on Feb. 12. As for Kansas, Iowa State is next up on the schedule for another tough road test in the Big 12. Both sides will be banded together over the next two months, hoping to accomplish the same goals. Another Lombardi back to Arrowhead and another cut-down net in Phog Allen.
