The Kansas basketball team won its fifth straight game on Monday night with a 63-58 victory over TCU, and Kansas’ depth was the key storyline in the matchup.

Eight different players scored for Kansas in a very well-rounded effort.

“I’ve said all along that we’ve got five guys that can all go out there and play and take over a game,” forward Jalen Wilson said. “That’s the beauty of our team. Not one person, not two people, but all of us collectively doing what it takes to win.”

In the win over the Horned Frogs, only two players hit double figures: Gradey Dick with 19 and Kevin McCullar with 15. Kansas’ depth did the rest.

Everyone chipped in, and that’s how the Jayhawks like things.

“Whoever scores that night is a scorer but we’re all going to have some type of effort to win, and that’s a part of basketball, that’s a part of championship teams,” Wilson said.

In what turned into a tight game down the stretch, Kansas executed when it needed to to secure another key win. Kansas’ depth was a factor, as was the team’s decision-making.

The Jayhawks were able to secure the win late with some clutch defense down the stretch. And after the game, McCullar broke down what happened defensively in the game’s final minutes to help Kansas pick up the road win.

“Coming down the stretch, we had to get stops. In that last play, I forgot who was guarding him (TCU guard Damion Baugh), but they did a good job forcing him baseline. So I just came over and got a block. Yeah, in the Big 12, you’ve got to make shots down the stretch to win big games,” said McCullar.

With their 63-58 victory on Monday, Kansas improved to 23-5 on the season and 11-4 in conference play. They are tied with the Texas Longhorns atop the conference and are locked in a neck-and-neck battle for the Big 12 regular season title.

Up next for the Jayhawks is a contest against the West Virginia Mountaineers in Kansas’ home confines of Allen Fieldhouse. That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. CT tip-off and can be seen on ESPN.
