A special guest was in the house on Tuesday night with Kansas hosting Kansas State. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce decided to soak in the Allen Fieldhouse atmosphere, watching the Jayhawks get revenge on their in-state rivals. Seems fitting that a Super Bowl winner was there to watch the defending national champions play.

Kelce was a guest in the Kansas locker room after the game. Once the final horn sounded, he made his way across the court and delivered a message. Star guard Jalen Wilson revealed Kelce discussed the mindset of adding another ring to the collection, something both KU and the Chiefs are trying to accomplish in the near future.

“They’re going for a championship, and he was telling us that winning one is good but winning two is even better,” Wilson said.

Kelce received his first championship in the early stages of 2020, defeating the San Francisco 49ers alongside superhero quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Wilson earned one this past March, taking down the North Carolina Tar Heels in the national championship game.

Two is in reaching distance for Kelce, playing in the Super Bowl with Kansas City on Feb. 12. Sunday marked another AFC championship at Arrowhead Stadium, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in thrilling fashion. As usual, Kelce had a major impact on the game, having seven receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown.

Back spasms were not enough to keep Kelce off the field either. A remarkable performance for somebody who is just beginning to build his resume with Kansas City.

Bill Self’s squad has more work to do than just one game though. Losers of three straight heading into the weekend, a road win in the Big 12/SEC Challenge against Kentucky was an important one for Kansas. Adding another victory over a top-10-ranked Kansas State team on Tuesday night will continue to build momentum as we turn the calendar to the month of February.

Bumps and bruises are going to continue in the final month, as you would expect. No conference is tougher on a weekly basis than the Big 12. Kansas is going to have dog fights in every game they play, especially when going on the road.

Kansas remained a one-seed in the latest edition of Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology. However, prior to the Kansas State showdown, he said the Jayhawks would have a “legitimate case” to move up to a No. 1 over Tennessee with a win. That’s now been accomplished.

No matter where they end up seeded, Wilson and his team will have the same goal of winning a championship. A midseason pep talk from Travis Kelce could be the fuel remembered during the home stretch.
