Kansas Football: 2024 safety Jonathan Kamara commits to the Jayhawks
Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge safety Jonathan Kamara announced his commitment to Kansas on Sunday. He chose the Jayhawks over offers from Arizona State, Texas and Washington among others.
Kamara is not ranked in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking or the 2024 On300. He is 6-foot-4 and weighs 205 pounds.
“First and foremost, I thank God for blessing me and putting me in the position I’m in today,” Kamara wrote in a message on Instagram. “I 100% would not be here without him! Next, I would like to thank my family and friends who have supported me throughout this process. I’m also thankful for my brothers at Timber Creek and especially at Desert Edge for helping me get where I’m today, as well for all the coaches at DE who have helped me throughout this process! I give all the Glory To God and with that being said, I’m truly blessed to announce my commitment to The University of Kansas! Rock Chalk.”
Kamara is now the fifth player in Kansas’ 2024 recruiting class. The others are Southfield (Mich.) three-star quarterback Isaiah Marshall, Beggs (Okla.) three-star running back Red Martel, Sioux Center (Iowa) three-star tight end Carson Bruhn and Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge three-star cornerback Aundre Gibson.
Following Kamara’s commitment, the Jayhawks’ group ranks No. 56 in the 2024 On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 9 in the Big 12. Kamara is Kansas’ most recent pledge since Bruhn, who chose the program on April 20.
Kansas has found success recruiting Arizona this cycle
Gibson, Kamara’s high school teammate, chose the Jayhawks over a month before Bruhn on March 5. Defensive backs coach Jordan Peterson played a key role in his decision.

“He has all the energy,” Gibson told On3 on Feb. 27. “He reminds me of being here at Desert Edge, the coaches. He gives me the same perspective as my DB coach, the same energy, the same love for the game, the same passion. That really stood out to me.”
Kansas is also a finalist for another one of Gibson and Kamara’s teammates: Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge three-star EDGE Deshawn Warner. He is choosing between Kansas, Oregon State, Texas and Washington.
“I feel like I’ve built a great relationship with coach (Taiwo Onatolu) and coach Peterson,” Warner told On3 on May 20. “My friend is committed there and they do a really good job at developing people at my position.”
“I am excited to see the environment,” he added. “I know they have a big college town, so I want to see what the environment’s like out there and the family feel that Aundre was telling me about.”
