Kansas guard David Coit plans to enter Transfer Portal

Kansas Jayhawks point guard David Coit plans to enter the Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. He will be a graduate transfer.
Prior to Kansas, Coit made multiple stops in his college career. In the 2021 season, he began his college career at the NJCAA Division III level. He then transferred up to Northern Illinois where he spent the next two seasons before transferring to Kansas for the 2024-25 season.
In his one season with Kansas, Coit saw a decrease in playing time from his time with Northern Illinois. With the Huskies, Coit started in 55 of 58 games over two seasons. That saw him average 35.7 minutes per game over those two seasons. Then, at Kansas, he only started in three out of 34 games and averaged 15.5 minutes per game. Those three starts came early in the season during non-conference play.
Unsurprisingly, that decrease in playing time also saw a decrease in scoring for Coit. This season, he averaged 5.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He did that on 37.8 percent shooting from the field, 38.7 percent from three-point range, and 75 percent from the free-throw line. That’s after he averaged 20.8 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game last season at Northern Illinois.
The Kansas Jayhawks are coming off what would be considered a down season for the program, particularly under head coach Bill Self. They went 21-13 overall and 11-9 in Big 12 play. Those 21 wins were the fewest for the program since the 2020-21 season. That also came with a sixth-place finish in the Big 12 regular season standings. For Self, that was the worst conference finish of his career, surpassing last season’s previous worst finish in a tie for fifth place.

Kansas went out in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament, dropping a game to Arizona. Still, the Jayhawks earned a seven-seed in the NCAA Tournament. There, they would lose in the first round to Arkansas, a 10-seed this season.
The Transfer Portal opened for college basketball ahead of the Sweet Sixteen. While that timing had less of an impact on Kansas because of when their season ended, there has been criticism of that timing for those teams still making NCAA Tournament runs. Still, the Jayhawks have had several players already enter the portal. Beyond David Coit, Zach Clemence and Flory Bidunga have both entered the portal already.
