LOOK: Kansas joins Miami with special tournament shirts ahead of Final Four matchup

The Jayhawks used their platform in the NCAA Tournament to raise awareness for the importance of Title IX legislature, wearing shirts dedicated to the groundbreaking law. The words are some of the most known in equal opportunity activism, plainly stating that gender could not be discriminated against.
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
The shirts drew eyes when Miami wore them before the Elite Eight, including those of women’s tennis legend Billie Jean King. King praised the Hurricanes for their support via her Twitter account.

“Cheers to the Miami Hurricanes basketball team, who wore these Title IX warmup shirts before a game this weekend,” King wrote. “Thank you for using your platform to remind fans about the importance of Title IX legislation, [Miami Hurricanes basketball].”
Passed in 1972, Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school that receives federal government funding. That paved the way for several women’s sports programs to begin emerging on college campuses, though some women’s teams existed prior to that as early as the 1890s.
