Kansas basketball star Kevin McCullar announced his return to the program this week, via an announcement from the Jayhawks’ official Twitter.

Just like Michael Jordan, the announcement simply said “I’m back.” It’ll be a boost to the 2022 national champions.

McCullar originally played for Texas Tech from 2019-22 before transferring to Kansas. He’ll use his final year of eligibility.

Last season, he had 10.7 points per game, seven rebounds per game, 2.4 assists per game and shot 44.4% from the floor and 29.6% from three-point range.

As a member of the Class of 2019, McCullar was a three-star recruit out of San Antonio (Texas) Karen Wagner, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 14 overall prospect in the state, the No. 29 shooting guard in the class and the No. 145 overall prospect in the class.

Originally, McCullar declared for the 2023 NBA Draft.

Kansas head coach Bill Self discussed McCullar’s future on Wednesday, confirming he plans to test the draft waters and see what happens.

“There’s no question Kevin McCullar could help himself by staying,” Self said, via the Kansas City Star’s Shreyas Laddha. “I think in his mind he was a five-year guy. For him to come back, it makes it his sixth year. I’ve talked with Kev and he knows. I’ve talked to his mother and father and they know. I’ve talked to people close in his camp, they know.

“Kevin will make the decision when the time is right, but he’s certainly going to go through the process and see what they say.”

When Self was sidelined with health issues this season, interim coach Norm Roberts had nothing but good things to say.

“(I like) everything about how Kevin plays,” Roberts said. “Kevin plays to win. He does all the little things, be it cutting to the basket, offensive rebounding, making the extra pass, and he’s a terrific defender …

“Kevin would be if you put a quote by him, he’s a winner, he’s a winning player. He makes winning plays all the time and it’s not always making a basket. He makes winning plays.”
