KJ Adams injury update: Bill Self reveals status vs. TCU
The Kansas Jayhawks suffered an injury in their road loss to the Iowa State Cyclones, seeing star forward KJ Adams go down with an apparent shoulder injury. Now, head coach Bill Self is going to need to find a way forward without Adams.
The first game that Kansas played without KJ Adams was the Sunflower Showdown against the Kansas State Wildcats. That ended up being a solid win for the Jayhawks. However, looking ahead to the upcoming game against the TCU Horned Frogs, Bill Self shared that the Jayhawks will be without Adams for that game and potentially a while longer.
“Same thing I told you yesterday, I haven’t had a medical report since then,” Bill Self said. “So, he’s going to be out — I don’t want to say significant time because with KJ you never know but he won’t play Wednesday. That’s for sure.”
The injury to KJ Adams happened during the second half of the loss to Iowa State. He had previously played 24 minutes in that game. Afterward, Self shared that he was hopeful the injury wouldn’t cost him any time, but acknowledged that the Jayhawks would be very lucky if that was the case.

“Yeah, he – I don’t know how. He hurt his shoulder,” Self said at the time of the injury. “So I don’t know how significant it is or how much time he’ll miss but, you know, he obviously couldn’t go there when he came back in. I hope it’s not significant, hopefully he won’t miss time but I think we probably will be very lucky if that’s the case.”
KJ Adams has been a key piece to the puzzle for Kansas this season. Now a senior, Adams is averaging 8.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this season. That’s on 50 percent shooting from the field and while contributing 0.8 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. For the most part, he’s shared time inside with Hunter Dickinson and Flory Bidunga.
Next up for Kansas Big 12 play continues with a road trip to play the TCU Horned Frogs. After that, the Jayhawks will host the Houston Cougars, another team currently ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll, on Saturday. That’s a game that Bill Self would love to have KJ Adams back for, but if he is able to play in it that would be his first game back from the injury.
