The story of college football is continuing. Kansas is now 5-0 for the first time since 2009 — and the Jayhawks caught plenty of breaks against Iowa State on Saturday.
Iowa State had a field goal hit the upright then badly missed the game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter. Lance Leipold certainly recognized the Jayhawks had plenty going for them.
“Dang, it feels good to be lucky sometimes,” he said during his postgame interview.

Not only is it Kansas’ first 5-0 start since 2009, but it’s also the first time the Jayhawks have won five games in total since that season. Leipold knows how important the milestone is and spoke about how much it means for not only the players on the roster, but also the fans in the stands.
“It’s great,” Leipold told ESPN’s Lauren Sisler. “I’m happy for our fans, happy for our players. They’ve worked so hard for this. Everybody’s starting to believe just a little bit more.”

While the offense did its job scoring 14 points en route to the win, the Kansas defense stepped up big. The Jayhawks held Iowa State to just one touchdown — a stark contrast to the last four games, where Kansas averaged 48.5 points per contest.
“So excited for our guys because really, today was a little bit different,” Leipold said. “… The defensive side of the ball, played really well. We had a lot of penalties. We were almost trying to give the thing away in the fourth quarter. But we found a way to make it happen.”
Now, Kansas’ next step is to try and get to 6-0 with a tough task ahead next week in TCU. That game is set for a noon ET kickoff Oct. 8 from David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
