Relationships help Kansas State win out with 4-star QB Avery Johnson
It came down to Kansas State and Oregon for quarterback Avery Johnson. The four-star out of Maize (Kan.) took official visits to both schools, the Ducks gave him a lot to think about, but in the end, he felt best about staying home and being a Wildcat.
“Making a decision like this that could impact the rest of my life was extremely tough, but I have a great support system around me that helped me make the best decision for me,” Johnson told On3.
“I am a Kansas guy and it is Kansas State. I want to put it on for my state. Staying home at Kansas State, I feel I can achieve all of my goals and reach all of my dreams.
“The confidence is there for me that Kansas State can develop me, teach me, and ultimately prepare me for the next level. Those are the things it came down to for me.”
Consistency paid off for Kansas State
The location is nice, but that was more of a bonus for the No. 231 prospect in the On3 Consensus. Arkansas led early. Nebraska and Tennessee were high on his list too at one time. Kansas State stayed consistent and worked its way to the top.
“Kansas State saw something in me late in my sophomore year, and from that time, they have been recruiting me hard. They made me feel like a top guy, they wanted me, and they quietly worked their way up my list.
“They were always there, but at times, other schools were higher than them. You want to go where you are wanted and Kansas State definitely made me feel wanted. The staff put a lot of time into me and that meant a lot to me in the end.”
Johnson and Klein have a strong connection
What could have been the X factor is Collin Klein. The offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach played a big role in Kelly’s decision.

“We spent a lot of time together and coach Klein and I have that trust. Just the feeling I have with him is different. He has always been upfront and honest with me regardless if it is what I want to hear or not.
“I like him as a coach and since he took over the offense, Kansas State has been moving up for me. I am a fit in coach Klein’s offense, he is going to put me in a situation to show my talent, and I like the fit.”
The fit in Manhattan is right for Johnson
Johnson is staying home. After he returned home from Oregon on June 26, the No. 1 prospect in Kansas talked it over with his family for a couple of days. On Wednesday, June 29, he knew his school. That next day, he let those close to him on his decision.
Now, everyone knows he is headed for Manhattan.
“I get to put it on for my state,” Johnson said. “Nothing feels like Kansas to me. That is where I want to be. It is a blessing to be able to stay home and go to Kansas State.
“The people are genuine and caring, they are about developing their players into men, and I know Kansas State is the right place for me.”
