Former Akron guard Nate Johnson has committed to Kansas State, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. Johnson entered the NCAA transfer portal on April 17.

At the time of his commitment, Johnson ranked as the No. 63 overall player in On3’s transfer portal rankings, as well as the No. 18 shooting guard. However, it appears the highly-touted two-guard is heading to the Big 12.

Johnson averaged 14.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for the Zips during the 2024-25 season. As a junior this past year, he nearly doubled his scoring numbers from the previous year.

He was an instrumental piece in the Zips’ run to capture the MAC championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament bid. After beating Miami (OH) 76-74, Akron would earn a 13-seed into March Madness. They would be paired with 4-seeded Arizona, where the Zips’ season would come to an unceremonious end to the Wildcats 93-65. Johnson scored 13 points during the losing effort, with most of his production coming at the free-throw line (11 of 12).

Johnson will join the Kansas State roster this offseason with 92 games of college basketball experience under his belt. Logging starts in 58 of those matchups, he has the experience and this past season, did so as the leading scorer to a conference championship team.

The Wildcats’ record finished below .500 (16-17) when their season ended in the second round of the Big 12 Conference tournament in March. Kansas State finished with a 9-11 record against Big 12 opponents as well.

Before college, Johnson was recruited by the likes of Wisconsin, Miami (OH), Kent State and Cincinnati, among others. He was unranked in the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

As of Wednesday, March 26, over 1,250 Men’s College Basketball players had entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. That number is expected to grow now that the 2024-25 college basketball season has reached its conclusion.
