Avery Johnson injury update: Kansas State QB gives latest on his status after leaving Colorado game
Avery Johnson feels “good,” after leaving Week 7’s win against Colorado after suffering an apparent non-contact injury in the second half on Saturday.
The Kansas State quarterback was throwing a pass and in the moment he released the ball, he knelt to the ground in pain clutching his side. He was taken to the locker room and later returned to finish the game under center.
“It was kind of weird,” Johnson said on Monday. “I’ve never been in that situation before. Ultimately, I just wanted to get back on the on the field with my guys, and was able to get to that point so was really just just grateful to get back out there and finish the game.
“We put on a full performance.”
Johnson completed eight of 10 passes for 86 yards at the time of his departure. By the end of the game, not only had Johnson helped lead the Wildcats to score on a game-winning drive and eventually securing the win, but he also finished the game 15 of 23 for 224 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception.

The performance helped the sophomore quarterback surpass 1,000 passing yards on the season. The second-leading rusher on Kansas State’s roster as well, Johnson is responsible for 14 touchdowns this season.
However, most of Kansas State’s explosion came on the ground as junior running back DJ Giddens rushed for 182 yards on 25 attempts, but never found his way into the end zone. Instead, it was Colorado transfer Dylan Edwards who scored one of two rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats on Saturday. Johnson was responsible for the other.
The victory improved the Wildcats to 5-1 and climbed to No. 17 in the latest AP Top 25 poll ahead of Week 8’s road trip against the West Virginia Mountaineers, and it appears the Wildcats’ QB1 will be ready to go. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air live on FOX.
