Johnson was a recent attendee of the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles, where he was rewarded the superlative of “Riser.” On3 also ranked him as a top performer.
Charles Power had this to say about his performance at Elite 11:
“Avery Johnson was arguably the best athlete on hand at the Elite 11 Finals. He’s well-established on that front. It’s Johnson’s continual improvement as a passer that has him tabbed as a riser coming out of the Elite 11 Finals. The Maize (Kan.) High three-sport star more than held his own in the passing-only setting. Johnson has made marked improvement as a passer by tightening his throwing motion. The ball comes out of his hand differently than it did this time last year. Those improvements have allowed Johnson to unlock some velocity on his passes. The improved passing skill set along with his noted athleticism projects Johnson as a dangerous dual-threat option at the next level.”
Johnson currently ranks as the No. 231 player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts for all four recruiting sites. He also tabs in as the No. 12 quarterback, and the best player in the state of Kansas.
Avery Johnson Scouting Summary
Three-sport star who is one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the 2023 cycle. Dynamic athlete for the position with speed and leaping ability that stacks up among wide receiver and defensive back prospects. An explosive mover both as an off-schedule playmaker and runner in the open field. Led his team to a state title appearance as a junior, passing for 2,550 yards and 20 touchdowns against six interceptions while rushing for 1,080 yards and 22 more scores. Makes plays against pressure in part due to his outstanding foot quickness. Has an elongated motion on Friday nights, but looks to have made progress in tightening things up prior to his senior season. Showed improved passing skills in the camp setting, generating good velocity and spinning the ball the best we’ve seen. Tests as a strong athlete, running a 4.54 second 40-yard dash and jumping nearly 37 inches in the vertical. Doubles as a standout in basketball, where he has above-the-rim bounce and baseball. Will need to add weight to his thinner 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame.
