Kansas State 4-star QB commit Avery Johnson scores three separate ways in dominant win
Four-star Maize (Kan.) quarterback and Kansas State commit Avery Johnson is one of the top quarterbacks in the country in the 2023 class.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder has put up his fair share of eye-popping passing performances, but he showed over the weekend why he is so coveted as a dual-threat quarterback at the next level.
According to Varsity Kansas’ Taylor Eldridge, Johnson amassed 340 total yards — 130 on the ground, 144 passing and 66 as a receiver — while scoring receiving, rushing and passing touchdowns.
Johnson’s squad went on to win the game 63-26, pushing them to 5-0 on the season. His performance comes just a week after he turned in yet another dominant showing, completing 11-of-15 passes for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns, plus 11 rushing yards and two more scores.

Avery Johnson Recruiting Profile
Johnson is the No. 120 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 10 passer and the No. 1 senior in the state of Kansas.
Below is a scouting summary of Johnson as a recruit:
“Three-sport star who is one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the 2023 cycle. Dynamic athlete for the position with speed and leaping ability that stacks up among wide receiver and defensive back prospects. An explosive mover both as an off-schedule playmaker and runner in the open field. Led his team to a state title appearance as a junior, passing for 2,550 yards and 20 touchdowns against six interceptions while rushing for 1,080 yards and 22 more scores. Makes plays against pressure in part due to his outstanding foot quickness.
… Has an elongated motion on Friday nights, but looks to have made progress in tightening things up prior to his senior season. Showed improved passing skills in the camp setting, generating good velocity and spinning the ball the best we’ve seen. Tests as a strong athlete, running a 4.54 second 40-yard dash and jumping nearly 37 inches in the vertical. Doubles as a standout in basketball, where he has above-the-rim bounce and baseball. Will need to add weight to his thinner 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame.
