Kansas State guard Markquis Nowell was named the 2023 Bob Cousy Award winner, it was announced Saturday. The award goes to the best point guard in college basketball each year.

Nowell had a breakout season as he led the new-look Wildcats under first-year coach Jerome Tang. He led K-State with 17.6 points and 8.3 assists per game, and put up some huge performances in the NCAA Tournament. During the Wildcats’ Sweet Sixteen game against Michigan State, he dished out 19 assists to set a new March Madness record.

“I’m honored to receive the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard,” Nowell said in a statement. “To be mentioned among the best players in the country at my position is truly a blessing. I want to give all the honor and glory to God for giving me the platform to showcase my talents and gifts this season. I’m not here without his grace.

“I can’t thank my teammates and coaches enough for all their hard work and sacrifice. It all started with Ish (Massoud) and I, and Coach Tang and his staff were able build a team around us and we became like brothers. We had a great year that I will always remember. I also want to thank my family for their sacrifice in helping me become the player and man I am today. Finally, a special shout out to K-State Nation for all their love and support during my career.”

Nowell started his career at Little Rock before transferring to Kansas State ahead of the 2021-22 season. In his first season with the Wildcats last year, he average 12.4 points and 5.0 assists under former coach Bruce Weber.

Kansas State saw its season come to an end in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament with a loss to Florida Atlantic. Nowell, now out of eligibility, opted to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft shortly thereafter.

“To the fans of Kansas State University, I hope I made you guys proud, I hope when you think of me you think of the kid from Harlem NY who as the most passionate player & most exciting player that played for K-State,” Nowell wrote. “I played for the name on the front of the jersey and not for the name on the back. … To play in the NBA has been a dream of mine since I was 7 years old and I finally have the opportunity to turn a dream into a reality. Continue to pray for me as I embark on this new journey and chapter of my life.
